The farm

Clouds on the mountain, rooibos on the sand, vines by the dam

Cloudskraal sits on the Bokkeveld escarpment where the fynbos, the Hantam Karoo and the Knersvlakte meet. Rooibos is cut by hand and sweated on the tea court; the only vineyard in the Nieuwoudtville Wine of Origin grows beside the dam that irrigates it; a Dohne Merino flock grazes the lands that rest under oats and lupins between plantings.

The people

Of the land and for the land

The Nel family have farmed this corner of the plateau since around 1770. The work is done by people with names, photographed on ordinary days: preparing the next rooibos planting, cooking roosterkoek on the coals in flower season, walking the winter vines.

Field note: Preparing the next planting

10 and 11 July 2026. Jan Martin prepared the soil for the next rooibos planting with the land in flower, and on the escarpment edge the small plants were out between the quartz stones.

A record of particular days from Alex's photographs, not a calendar of what happens on the farm every season.
